MVVM in Android - CodeProject

MVVM in Android

MVVM stands for Model-View-ViewModel, which is a pattern widely adopted in MS WPF and Silverlight. In this article, I am going to discuss the implementation of MVVM pattern in Android (Java) with the help of Android-Binding framework.

WCF Client Server Application with Custom Authentication, Authorization, Encryption and Compression - CodeProject

Introduction to Article

With the appearance of Windows Communication Foundation building Service Oriented Applications became easier than ever. And lots of articles poured in with extensions for special cases. Even so, there are still situations left untreated. Like the following I had to resolve:

- Client-server application – http protocol – NO IIS
- Authentication – user/password from a database – NO SSL/X509 certificate
- Authorization – roles from a database
- Encryption for the credentials (with option for the entire request/response)
- Compression for both the request and response.

Creating XML and Java Technology Based Applications Using JAXB - CodeProject

Introduction to the article

eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is a platform and language-independent way of defining tags. XML allows you to use meaningful tags to represent data in a structured format. Unlike HyperText Markup Language (HTML), which is used to display text, XML is a language to create extensible custom tags to represent the structure of data.
SAX parser is an event driven low-level parser, that responds to the elements of an XML document as it parses through the documents. The data is not maintained in memory. Efficiency of parsing data into elements is the key feature of SAX parser. DOM parser is a high-level parser that maintains the data structures of a document in memory as it parses through the document. This helps you to manage and manipulate data as needed. DOM API follows the tree model for maintaining the data in memory.
Formerly known as Project Adelard, Java Architecture for XML binding (JAXB) combines the benefits of Document Object Model (DOM) parser and Simple API for XML (SAX) parser.
JAXB reduces the execution time significantly and creates a robust object model for enterprise level applications.
This reference point explains how to use JAXB to create and distribute high-performance XML-enabled applications with minimum effort.

WPF/MVVM Quick Start Tutorial - CodeProject

Introduction to Article

Assuming that you have a decent understanding of C++ and a modest understanding of C#, getting started in WPF shouldn't be too difficult. I started looking at WPF 6 months ago, and after probably causing a spike in Google's searches, I finally started to understand and become productive with WPF (whether I've missed the boat on this one, is another story for another day).
As with learning any new technology, you get the benefit of hindsight. From my perspective, almost every tutorial on WPF I've come across is inadequate for one of several reasons:
  • the example is all in WPF
  • the example glosses over the key facts that would actually make your life easier.
  • the example tries to show off WPF's capabilities with lots of pointless effects that aren't helping you.
  • the example uses classes that have properties that appear far too similar to framework keywords and classes, and are therefore difficult to idenfity in the (XAML) code as being user defined (ListBox GroupStyle's Name is a complete headache for novices).
So to address this, I've written this based on what I would have liked to have found as the #1 hit on Google after typing 'WPF Tutorial'. This article may not be 100% correct, or even do things 'the one true way', but it will illustrate the main points that I wish I had found in one place 6 months ago.
I will quickly introduce some topics, then show an example that explains or demonstrates each point. Accordingly, I haven't really attempted to make the GUIs pretty, that's not the point of this article (see the bullet points above).
As this tutorial is quite long, I've elided quite a lot of code for brevity, so please download the attached zip file, and look at the examples (.Net 4.0/VS2010). Each example builds on the previous one.

Playing Wav files with .NET - CodeProject

The old .NET Framework logoImage via WikipediaIntroduction to article

This article illustrates how simple it is to add sound functionality to any .NET application. I use the PlaySound Win32 function located in the winmm.dll library. The sample does not include all the different flags associated with fdwSound; these can be acquired in a number of different ways. Try opening a Managed C++ project and type the PlaySound function in there. It should give you the signature. For any of the fdwSound constants, you can type them in, and either hover the mouse over to get the value, or right click and select Go to definition to see where they are defined.

File your taxes easily from your Android phone with TurboTax SnapTax | Hello Android

Image representing Android as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBaseI already filed this year but my jaw still hit the ground.

Just when you thought you’ve seen just about everything an Android phone is capable of doing, enter TurboTax SnapTax. This handy application allows you to file your taxes easily from your Android device. No more tediously filing your W-2 online; TurboTax SnapTax allows you to take a picture of your W-2, which will then allow the app to scan and extract the appropriate information from the W-2 form.
After this, you can verify that the information is correct and then file your taxes. While the TurboTax SnapTax app itself is free, there will be a $14.99 charge for filing taxes from the app.

AI for Target Number Game Using Genetic Algorithm - CodeProject

Sounds interesting:

Target Number Game

In this game player has task to find mathematical expression whose value is closest to randomly choosen value using only basic operations and predefined set of numbers. The game has other restrictions: all intermediate results and final result must be positive integer number. Additional restrictions are also placed on selected and target numbers. Player gets 4 random numbers between 1 and 9, one number from { 10, 15, 20 } set and one from { 25, 50, 75, 100 } set. Target number is randomly chosen from interval [100,999]. Player can use selected numbers only once. Who ever has expression with the closest number to the target wins and if they are tie, player who was choosing the numbers wins.

A Picturebox Control to Display Both Remote Sensing and Regular Digital Images - CodeProject

Introduction to Article
Extracting useful land use features, such as buildings, roads, and even vehicles, from remote sensing imagery has long been a focus in the field of digital image analysis. Now many software and web services (e.g., Google Earth, Google Map, ArcMap and Bing Maps) have successfully applied information from remote sensing images to assist the public to solve a wide variety of problems like navigation, urban planning and environment engineering. However, compared with regular digital images, the remote sensing images usually have more bands and in various data types (e.g., byte, integer, float, and double). Due to the specialties of remote sensing images, they are not well supported by regular image viewers. For example, the built-in Picturebox control in Visual Studio is not able to display remote sensing images.

PlayStation Move Hack: Measuring The Earth's Rotation With Move - G4tv.com

PlayStation Move - RearImage by William Hook via FlickrWho says the Playstation 3 is only a toy!?

Scientists (presumably mad) at pabr.org have combined the Move with an old-school turntable in order to provide experimental evidence of Earth's diurnal rotation. Basically, you can use a Move and your dad's record player instead of a 70-meter high, perfectly weighted Foucault's Pendulum to confirm that the earth actually rotates in space, find geographic North, and measure latitude.
It's not really fun, per se, but it's very, very cool. Check it out in the video below, and visit the site for tech-specs so you can recreate the device at home!
