Tech Review: T-Mobile G2 Android Smartphone - G4tv.com

Here is the review of T-Mobile's G2 Android Phone.

What You Need to Know
* The T-Mobile G2 measures about the same size as an iPhone.
* It's a little thicker and weighs 6.5 ounces, with some heft to it.
* The 3.7" touch screen looks clean and sharp.
* Colors are vibrant but it might be hard to see in direct sunlight.
* The G2 features an optical track pad, which is great if you're a BlackBerry user, but it's unnecessary.
* One thing about the keyboard is that it has a swinging hinge and doesn't lock in place.
* This is only an issue if you're laying on your back and texting.
* The G2 runs on Android 2.2, but T-mobile hasn't done anything different with this OS, which is a good thing.
* It runs on an 800 MHz processor and launches apps quite quickly.
* Pinch and zoom work great and you can flip and swipe with ease.
* This is just as good as any other Android phone we've tested.
* The phone supports Flash 10.1 but it can be a little weird when trying to navigate Flash heavy websites.
* The biggest selling point is its 4G like speeds, which delivers.
* We found that the G2 was faster than other 4G phones like the HTC Evo.
* It uses T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, which we tested around town and found some areas spotty.
* In our speed test, the G2 would clock in anywhere from 256 to 640 kilobytes per second.
* T-Mobile estimates that 4G coverage should be about 200 million people by the end of 2010.
* A major metropolitan area like Los Angeles is covered pretty well by their 4G.
* The voice controls on the G2 are as good as we expect from Google.
* Features include speech to text, call numbers, and search the web.
* The 5 megapixel camera can shoot in 720p, which looks okay.
* Shooting video doesn't stabilize too well while moving, but the images and colors are crisp.
* Photos can get washed out in extreme situations.
* The G2 only has 4 GB of internal memory and comes with an 8 GB micro SD card, which is upgradeable to 32 GB.
Price
* $130 with a T-Mobile contract. (How do we rate gadgets?)

The new iPod Nano is now available in stores, but are the prices worth the new features? Kevin Pereira and Alison Haislip take a look at the portable medial player, like its new multi-touch screen, built-in FM radio and more.

What You Need To know

• It measure 1.5" across and about as thin as an iPod Touch.
• It weighs under an ounce.
• It has a 1.5" multi-touch screen but is not too small to use.
• It works like an iPhone with swiping and tapping, and you can rotate the screen.
• Since there's no home button, you just swipe right or tap and hold to go back.
• One minor gripe is when you're swiping through home screens, it doesn’t cycle around so you have to swipe back and forth a lot.
• They've kept a lot of features like FM radio, pedometer, Nike Plus capability and photo viewer, which work just as well on a device half the size of the original.
• The FM radio is cool, especially because you can still pause it for up to 15 minutes or rewind to hear what you've missed.
• The fitness apps like the pedometer, Nike Plus and the stop watch all work like they should.
• Starting and stopping timers might get a little wonky since it's so small.
• Looking at photos may seem useless since it's on such a tiny screen, but the resolution isn't bad.
• There is no pinch and zoom on photos.
• The sound quality is good but you should probably buy better ear buds.
• They took away some features, like video camera, mic, speaker, watching videos, calendar, games or alarm clock.

Price

• 8 GB for $150
• 16 GB for $180

Rating

• 4 Seals of Approval out of 5 (How do we rate gadgets?)
• Even though they've taken away a lot of features and kept the price high, the design and performance are some of the best for a device this size.

The iPod Touch has a brand new look with a slew of new features! Kevin Pereira and Alison Haislip review Apple's latest generation of portable media players with its dual cameras, HD video recording and FaceTime capability.

What You Need To Know

• The iPod Touch is thinner than the new Nano at just under 3/10ths of an inch thick.
• It weighs an ounce lighter than the iPhone4, so when this thing is in your pocket, you can barely feel it.
• They've added the same Retina Display that the new iPhone has, so it's the same experience.
• The Retina Display has an 960x640 resolution and is one of the most beautiful displays you can get on a mobile device.
• It may not have the contrast ratio that AMOLED screens do, but the detail and clarity is second to none.
• It also has the same improved interface as the iPhone 4, including multi-tasking and the A4 processor, which makes it much faster than the last iPod.
• Multi-tasking is also just as fast as you want it to be, so be ready to play a lot of games at once.
• They've added two cameras: one on the back and one in the front.
• New features include HD video recording, FaceTime capability and the Game Center, all of which work pretty well.
• The back camera is about only one mega pixel, so pictures are not the best.
• There's also no flash but you can record 720p video.
• We were surprised that Apple didn't give the Touch a better camera since the iPhone's camera is great.
• FaceTime works exactly like an iPhone 4, which means it's practically seamless.
• If you want to call someone, just enter their email address and call.
• Game Center is Apple's answer to multi-player gaming on the iPhone. You can ask friends to play online in certain games, or compare states and achievements.
• You can even talk to them while you're playing. Once this feature grows, it will be a lot of fun.
• Audio quality is good but again, you're going to need to buy a better pair of ear buds.

• 8 GB for $230
• 32 GB for $300

Rating
